Supervision and teaching

Kamal actively engages in supervision at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. This includes hosting several DPhil and MSc students.

Kamal Mahtani is a nationally and internationally recognised Senior Academic GP and Professor of Evidence-Based Healthcare, one of only a few academics to hold that Professorial title. He has made significant contributions to academic research, teaching and leadership.

Research

Kamal Mahtani is a Principal Investigator, accomplished health services researcher and group lead. He has over 100 peer-reviewed publications and has attracted several million pounds in research funding, including back-to-back NIHR Fellowships. He currently leads a research group focusing on understanding, evaluating and improving the evidence base for service innovations in primary care. The work includes assessing workforce roles such as paramedics, clinical pharmacists and social prescribing link workers in general practice. He co-founded the Oxford Social Prescribing Research Network, which includes over 100 stakeholders and has attracted over £1.2M in research funding since 2018. He is particularly interested in how evidence is translated into practice and policy. He is a founding member of the Catalog of Bias team.

Teaching and supervision

Kamal is a recognised leader in postgraduate executive education. He is the inaugural Director of the University of Oxford's new Master's programme in Global Healthcare Leadership. This innovative programme combines applied health sciences, industry and business sector training, and pastoral care for a comprehensive learning experience. He is also the Director of the MSc EBHC (Systematic Reviews) and Chair of Examiners of the MSc Translational Health Sciences. Kamal also leads the EBM thread in the undergraduate Medical School Graduate Entry Medicine (A101) curriculum. He supervises multiple DPhil, MSc and UG students.

Leadership and capacity building

Kamal is committed to personal and leadership development. He is the Director of the Oxford Primary Care Research Leadership programme, which has supported the development of 100+ leaders in academic primary care. He is the Lead and Senior Champion (2019-) for staff Personal Development in the department. This includes implementing a new Leadership Learning Pathway (LLP), providing equitable and inclusive leadership training to staff colleagues. The LLP featured in the department's award of Athena Swan Gold status in 2023. Kamal is also a graduate of the NIHR Ashridge Leadership programme.

Between 2018 and 2023, Kamal was Chair of the NIHR Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Community Health and Social Care Prioritisation Committee, where he provided national-level leadership and supported the commissioning of an extensive portfolio of community-based research that drew from an annual NHS R&D budget of over £80M. 

He has been a past BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine and Cochrane journal editor. 

Recognition

Kamal Mahtani received the 2016 RCGP/SAPC Yvonne Carter Award for outstanding new researcher and was honoured with Fellowship status by the Royal College of General Practitioners in 2019. In 2020, he received the RCGP/SAPC John Fry Award for his contributions to the field of general practice through research and publishing. He was also made a Fellow of Kellogg College. His work and views have been featured on the BBC, Channel 4 and Reuters news.

Equality and Diversity

Kamal was the first British-Indian to be promoted to Professor in his host department at the University of Oxford. He strongly advocates for underrepresented groups in academia and is a member of the department People and Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Committee.  

Kamal continues to practice as an NHS GP within the local region. 

Outside work, Kamal is a proud Dad and husband who enjoys spending time with his family, gardening and coastal walks.
